The Algonquin Picture Dictionary (Anishinabe Kegonan Masinazowin Mazinahigan) was previously published by the Algonquin Anishinabeg Nation Tribal Council in 2015. The main contributors of this project were provided by fluent Algonquin language speakers. A total of seven (7) Algonquin communities participated in this project:
Abitibiwinni 2. Barriere Lake 3. Kitigan Zibi 4. Kitcisakik 5. Lac Simon 6. Long Point 7. Timiskaming
There are beautiful, culturally-based illustrations that were drawn specifically for the spiral bound Algonquin Picture Dictionary. Approximately 450 words were separated into 26 subject categories. Three languages were included throughout the book. A fluent speaker from each of the previous mentioned Algonquin communities provided the written translation work required.
Since the publication of the Algonquin Picture Dictionary, voice recordings were conducted. Also, there was an additional contribution of written Algonquin words on behalf of Wahgoshig. There are approximately 3,600 audio files in total that were carefully edited. A total of eight Algonquin dialects are included within the app. It was necessary to document all information provided by fluent speakers from each Algonquin nation. There are some variances in regards to the writing and pronunciation of some Algonquin words. It was important to respectfully record the written, as well as the audio component from each participating Algonquin community.
The Algonquin Picture Dictionary app is an easy and useful tool that can assist with expanding the vocabulary for any age to speak Anishinabemowin!
